Along the way all the ingredients are tested again and again, from organic and gluten-free certification to testing for meeting Prop 65 standards.  In order to meet these strict standards, the Axiom team works to improve our processes through more research, innovation and partnerships. For example, as a founding member of the World Rice Alliance, we are constantly working to source rice that is low in naturally-occurring heavy metals from multiple countries at once, as Axiom does from ideal areas of Thailand, China, Argentina, Vietnam, Cambodia and even California. 

Not resting on laurels, Axiom is constantly setting new bars.  Axiom’s team has designed new proprietary processes utilized in Thailand and two other US manufacturing facilities, resulting in the first suspension-grade, grit-free rice protein, instantized rice milk powder with protein, rice bran protein, fiber and milk, plus other new products every 3-6 months.  In addition, multiple clinical trials are utilizing Axiom’s Oryzatein®, the most recent of which shows Oryzatein rice protein isolate is as beneficial as Whey Protein Isolate at building muscles, decreasing fat mass and aiding exercise recovery, to becoming the USP monographed standard for brown rice protein.

Hexane-Free Protein Extraction

Would you feel comfortable eating a product that was at some point doused in a volatile liquid known to be an atmospheric pollutant? Neither would we, and nor would we feel comfortable selling it either. Many plant protein manufacturers use hexane as their solvent during the extraction of edible oils and protein from vegetables or seeds, most notably soy and some rice proteins. Though, using hexane might be efficient, accurate and less expensive, Axiom Foods believes in producing quality ingredients without compromising sustainability, public and environmental health.

Hexane has not been established as a carcinogen to humans or animals, but the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has determined that acute exposure to hexane produces mild Central Nervous System depression, while chronic exposure results in polyneuropathy. Employees at food-processing plants incur the highest risk for exposure, but this does not leave consumers behind who are potentially exposed to residues in foods. The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) currently does not require testing of hexane levels in foods, nor does the FDA impose a ceiling on hexane residue in soy foods.

In addition to exposure risks, using this conventional hexane method poses other threats at local and global levels. On an environmental level, hexane is classified as a “hazardous air pollutant” due to its contribution to ground level ozone, which is the main component of smog. On a personal, employee level, although safety standards exist, hexane’s highly volatile nature can place facility workers in danger.

Low Temperature Protein Extraction

Not only is our protein extraction hexane-free, but we understand the delicacy of working with proteins by manufacturing them using a proprietary low-heat process. To avoid protein denaturation, which can alter the chemical profile and thus decrease its efficacy and make it more harmful than helpful, Axiom Foods uses low temperatures which also prevents off flavors.

Not All Rice Protein is Hydrolyzed or Has MSG

Organic Oryzatein is NOT hydrolyzed, does NOT contain monosodium glutamate (MSG)—and we have independent lab tests to prove it. This MSG myth evolved from conventional vegetable protein which is made from “junk” vegetables, typically unfit for sale and especially selected so as to have naturally high contents of “glutamate.” Hydrolysis is used to extract the protein fraction which involves boiling these vegetables in a vat of acid, followed by the process of neutralization with caustic soda. The resulting product is a brown sludge that collects on top. This is scraped off and allowed to dry. The end product is a brown powder that is high in MSG. 

The controversy over this supposed nervous system stimulant continues to date, especially due to its ubiquitous presence in highly processed foods and its claimed relation to multiple health conditions. Despite this, the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology has concluded that MSG is not considered a food allergen and is a safe food ingredient. It is possible that a person might have a mild reaction to extremely large doses of MSG, but it is usually transient and benign. Additionally, the FDA has designated MSG as “safe to consume” while the World Health Organization (WHO) has placed MSG in the safest category for food additives.

Essentially, MSG is glutamate (an amino acid) that has been produced outside of the body (via acid hydrolysis), to which a mineral ion has been attached and usually accompanied by an array of by-products or impurities. Whether or not it produces negative effects upon consumption, Axiom Foods bypasses this possibility by proudly manufacturing non-hydrolyzed plant proteins.

Oryzatein® SG-BN Rice Protein

The first line of highly functional, suspension grade brown rice protein ingredients, designed to replace allergenic ingredients such as soy, whey, wheat gluten and yeast extract. The initial variation of Oryzatein SG (suspension grade) starts with SG-B/N which is the first brown rice protein with excellent solubility for beverage and nutrition applications including RTDs.
